Industrialisation and Social Inequality in Victorian English Novels

The Victorian era witnessed unprecedented industrial growth, transforming Britain's economic, social and cultural landscape. While industrialisation stimulated technological advancement and urban expansion, it also intensified social inequality, poverty, class divisions and labour exploitation. Victorian English novelists responded to these developments by portraying the realities of industrial society and exposing the hardships faced by the working class. This study examines the representation of industrialisation and social inequality in selected Victorian English novels, analysing how literary narratives critique the consequences of rapid industrial growth through realistic depictions of class conflict, urban poverty and unequal distribution of wealth. Employing a qualitative approach based on textual analysis, the study explores the ways in which Victorian fiction reflects the tensions between industrial progress and human welfare. The findings suggest that Victorian novels function not only as literary works but also as powerful social commentaries that raise awareness of economic injustice, advocate social reform and remain relevant to contemporary discussions on inequality and social justice.
